Nexstar SLT Error "No Response 17 (16)"
UPDATE: It happened again on *29 OCT 2012 after long observation night two weeks before. Same symptom with No Response 17. So, I opened the cover, disconnect and reconnect all connector and leave the mount opened. After an hour or two, it came back alive. So, was it because of bad connection or moisture built up? I have put 5-6 bags of silica gel. Hopefully it won't happen again.
When setting up my Nexstar SLT mount in preparation to observe the Jupiter late last night, I've got "No Response 17" on the handset. I've tried all the possible solutions outlined in Option 1 but still could not get it to work. I had about 3 hours of observation on the previous night, the night was cold and as usual the early morning dew starting to build up throughout the session. So, Option 2 could be a possible solution. After exposing the internal circuitry overnight, it is working fine in the morning.
Option 2. Condensation inside the mount
It is possible that condensation build up inside the mount could lead to circuit boards malfunction. As such, remove the cover to expose the circuit boards. Let it open for a couple of hours in dry condition. It might be a good idea to put some desiccant/ silica gel bags inside the mount at a safe area prevent similar problem in the future.

What does the hand control message No response 16 (and/or No response 17) mean?
"No response" means that the hand control has lost communication with the electronics board within the base of the telescope. The number following this message will indicate the address of the component that has lost communication. 16 indicates the azimuth or RA motor board, 17 the altitude (declination) motor board. Unfortunately, this number doesn't tell why the error has occurred.
To clear the no response messages, repeatedly press UNDO. This fix may be only temporary and does not address the potential underlying problem.
There are several reasons why this error message would appear. Insufficient power is the most common. Check your power supply. If the DC battery is low, the scope will be unable to communicate with the base of the telescope. If you are using an AC adapter, please make sure that the adapter is rated for an output of 12 volts DC at a minimum of 2500mA (2.5 Amps). If your adapter puts out less current than 2500mA, the scope will not be able to communicate properly. Check all power connections including the power port pin for solid connectivity.
If you have a cable in the PC port (of a mount that has a PC port) that is not connected to anything, then this can also cause the messages to appear.
The next potential causes: the hand control, the motor control circuit board, the motors, or the cables-wiring-connectors in between. Plug in the hand control to an AUX port and see if this eliminates the message. CGE DEC and RA cables are easy to check and swap around to see if it's these cables or their ports. Advanced GT mounts similarly have the DEC cable that might be the problem.
Try reflashing (updating) the motor control firmware. If you are able to update the hand control but not the motor control, the problem is most likely the motor control board.
A computer crash or communications break between your PC and the hand control during an MC update may result in either “Initializing”, blank screen, “No Response 16” or “No Response 17” messages. This will prevent your updating the MC for your mount.
To clear the no response messages, repeatedly press UNDO. Then proceed as usual with the MC update.

If these ideas don't work, it’s best to send the mount and hand control back to Celestron for factory service.

Nexstar Custom Location
How can I enter my location manually into the NexStar SE? Can I use information from my handheld GPS?
You can manually enter in your location via the hand control. You need your latitude and longitude in the degrees-minutes-seconds format. Get this information from your GPS, maps or Google Earth. Press the following upon powering up your telescope: MENU - SCOPE SETUP - SETUP TIME-SITE. Once in this menu press the UNDO button until the hand control reads SELECT ONE – CITY DATABASE. Scroll using the 6 or 9 buttons to the option CUSTOM SITE. Press ENTER. Now enter your specific longitude and latitude.
Please note that if you change the location of your telescope, depending on how far away it is you will most likely have to enter the coordinates of that new site. Changes of just a few miles don’t need this adjustment, but moves of 40-50 miles as the crow flies or more would require updated coordinates.

Flashing SPC880NC to SPC900NC on Windows 7 Pro

1. Install Windows XP Mode and Windows Virtual PC.
2. Launch Windows XP Mode.
3. Install WcRmac and WcCTrl.
4. Download ConversionPack.zip .
5. Extract spc900nc.bin from the ConversionPack.zip into C:\Program Files\TWIRG\WcRmac\binary\8116 or the folder that WcRmac is installed.
6. Download the SPC880NC driver and extract the driver spc880nc.inf .
7. Connect the webcam into the USB port. On the Windows Virtual PC window, Go to USB tab and click "Unidentified Device Attach". Found New Hardware Wizard window will open and select "No, not this time" when ask to connect to Windows Update for the driver. On the next window, choose "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)". Then, choose "Search for the best driver from these location" and point to the location of the spc880nc.inf folder. The camera will be recognised as PCVC750K. The webcam will appear in My Computer and clicking the icon will launch the camera. Verify if it is working and leave the preview mode open.
8. Launch WcRmac. Read the warning and check the 'OK...' box to accept the full risk. Go to WebCat>DS Interface. Select Phillips PCVC750K and click Connect. Go to Binaries Tab and select spc900nc.bin that was extracted in Step 5. Click "Load into cam". Wait for the firmware flashing to finish.
9. Download and install SPC900NC Windows XP driver.
10. After the firmware flashing has finished, unplug and replug the webcam from the USB port. On the Windows Virtual PC window, Go to USB tab and click "Unidentified Device Attach". The driver will be found automatically due to Step 9. The webcam will available in My Computer as SPC900NC and verify if it is working. Leave the preview mode open.
11. Launch WcRmac again. Read the warning and check the 'OK...' box to accept the full risk. Goto WebCam>DS Interface. Select Phillips SPC 900NC and click Connect. Go to Macros tab, select "Set OPTIMIZED COLOR...". Click "Run checked". Info box will show "macro(s) success". Close WcRMac.
12. Launch WcCtrl. Click "Connect a Cam" and choose the SPC 900NC. Go to the Secondary tab, click "Factory Setting". The webcam is now an SPC 900NC.
14. Exit Windows XP Mode. Download Windows 7 driver and install it in the Windows 7 PC. Use SharpCap or AmCap for capturing video.
